Choosing an ATV
When you are looking at ATV models and the salesperson starts to talk about all the features of this or that model, it’s hard not to get swept up in the excitement. You might start imagining yourself tearing up a trail at high speeds. However, an ATV purchase is not something you should rush into without considering all the possible factors. There are many things to consider if you wish to find a model that meets all of your needs.
That is why the experts at Exxxtreme Cycles have put together this handy guide on choosing your own ATV. To view our stock of new and pre-owned ATVs or speak with our helpful staff, visit us at either of our dealerships, with one in La Feria and another in Peñitas. We are proud to be your ATV dealership for southern Texas, including communities like Zapata and Brownsville.
Budget
The very first thing you should do is create a budget. It’s too easy to be charmed by a top-of-the-line model that turns out to be quite a bit more than you intended to spend. Establish how much you are willing to spend and eliminate anything beyond your chosen price range. If money is tight, consider purchasing a used ATV, though keep in mind that you may need to pay for some repairs to get it back into top shape. Many people also make the mistake of not including the cost of necessary gear like a helmet or tire pressure gauge in the budget, so don’t forget these “hidden costs”.
Types of ATVs
ATVs come in a variety of models, but overall they can be split into two types. Each supports a unique style of riding and has features and specs suited to that particular style. Figure out how you will be using your ATV most of the time, and use that to pick which type is best for you.
Utility ATVs are the more common type. They are built to be boxy and bulky, and often include features like cargo racks and two-up seats. Obviously, this makes them ideal for work projects. However, they are not all work and no play, as their solid, dependable construction is also great for long trail rides.
Sport ATVs are made in a sleeker style. They have a better suspension system for those who want thrills. They tend to lack the more utilitarian features found on utility ATVs, instead being fine-tuned for entertainment purposes. Adrenaline-junkies will want to look into this ATV type.
The Size
A final thing to consider is the size. Smaller models are better suited for tighter trails and are more agile due to their light build. Larger ATVs have bigger engines for more power, as well as room for storage space and sometimes even another passenger. Either way, make sure your ATV is the right size so that you can ride comfortably and remain in control of the vehicle.
